European Women on Boards, a Brussels-based nonprofit association, has developed Gender Diversity Index (GDI) to allow companies to benchmark themselves against others in their country or sector with regard to gender diversity. The index takes into account the share of women on boards, in executive functions and in board committees. The starting point of the association's work is the belief that gender diversity leads to diverse thinking and better decision making in companies.
There is still a lot of room for improvement: in the 2020 index, only 13 % percent of the 668 companies studied were even close to gender equality, and while some companies have greatly increased the share of women in leadership positions, there has been very little change at the bottom end of the index. According to the 2020 index, companies from Norway, France, UK, Finland and Sweden were the closest to having gender balanced governance. Link to GDI report here.
