Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) represent 99% of all EU companies, but only 9% of SMEs have registered their intellectual property rights. The SME Fund, a joint effort of the European Commission and the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), was created to support SMEs in the area of IP rights.
Companies fitting the official EU definition of a SME and based in one of the EU member states can apply for a 50% reimbursement on trade mark and/or design basic application fees. The trade mark or design can be registered at either EU, regional (Benelux), or national level and each SME can be reimbursed up to a maximum of EUR 1 500. Applications are open until January 31, and the next window will be in March 2021. Find out more on the EUIPO website.
